Fede Alvarez Wants To Try Something New With Alien Romulus Sequel: ‘We Can Go Into Uncharted Waters’
Fede Alvarez Teases the Future of Alien: Romulus
With Alien: Romulus, director Fede Alvarez set out to craft a film that seamlessly fits between Alien and Aliens, drawing inspiration from the franchise’s earliest installments while also incorporating elements from Alien: Resurrection, Prometheus, and even the Alien: Isolation video game. His goal? To reintroduce the franchise’s signature atmosphere while expanding its mythology with fresh characters and new twists.
However, if a sequel to Romulus moves forward, Alvarez is eager to take the story in an entirely new direction. “Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are developing it right now,” he tells Empire. “We’re really excited about the possibilities. In Romulus, we revisited a lot of elements I’ve wanted to see again for a long time. Now, we have the chance to venture into uncharted territory.”
A potential sequel would likely continue the journey of Cailee Spaeny’s character, Rain, introduced in Romulus. “I think it would be thrilling to follow familiar characters into a part of the Alien universe we’ve never explored before, where we can uncover things that have never been seen,” Alvarez hints.
That said, a sequel will only happen if the right story presents itself. “The biggest mistake with sequels is making them just because you can,” Alvarez explains. “With the success of Romulus, there’s no doubt we could make another one. But I wouldn’t do it unless we had a truly compelling idea—something that’s worthy of the Alien name.”
For now, fans will have to wait and see—but excitement is already bursting at the seams.
