The First Until Dawn Movie Trailer Turns Sony’s Survival Horror Video Game Into A Time Loop Slasher

Until Dawn Movie Reimagined as a Time-Loop Slasher—First Trailer Unveiled

The trend of video game adaptations dominating Hollywood continues to gain momentum. Recent successes like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog have proven that bringing beloved gaming franchises to the big screen can be a recipe for box office gold. With projects like Minecraft: The Movie, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Helldivers II on the horizon, the genre shows no signs of slowing down.

One upcoming adaptation that initially raised eyebrows, however, is Sony’s Until Dawn. The original 2015 game was an interactive survival horror experience where players made crucial choices to determine the fate of a group stranded in a haunted ski lodge. How would director David F. Sandberg translate such a uniquely player-driven narrative into a feature film? The answer, it turns out, is a bold reimagining—keeping the title, maintaining Peter Stormare’s presence, but transforming the concept into a time-loop slasher thriller.

A Fresh Take on Until Dawn

Gone are the Wendigos, the snow-covered setting, and the classic butterfly effect decision-making system. Instead, the new adaptation embraces the cyclical nature of death and resurrection that’s familiar to gamers. In Sandberg’s version, a group of friends finds themselves trapped in a horrifying loop, hunted by a masked killer and forced to relive their final hours—dying repeatedly as they struggle to survive until dawn.

While this departure from the source material might be jarring for longtime fans, the trailer suggests an intriguing horror concept in its own right. The film stars Ella Rubin, Odessa A’zion, Michael Cimino, and others, playing a group of young adults facing an ever-changing killer with increasingly terrifying methods. Meanwhile, Stormare reprises his role as the enigmatic Dr. Hill, offering a familiar anchor to the game’s legacy. A nod to Until Dawn’s signature hourglass imagery also makes an appearance, adding a playful homage to the original.

Official Synopsis

“One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one… only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again – only each time, the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. As hope dwindles, the group realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.”

What’s Next?

A full-length trailer for Until Dawn is expected soon, building anticipation ahead of its April 25, 2025 release. Until then, fans may find themselves looping through the teaser on repeat—eager to see whether this reimagined horror film will stand out as one of the year’s biggest surprises.
