Cinematic adaptations of PlayStation games have had a mixed track record. HBO’s The Last of Us set a new standard for video game storytelling on TV, while Uncharted, starring Tom Holland, was… certainly released in February 2022. Meanwhile, Gran Turismo, led by Archie Madekwe, Orlando Bloom, and David Harbour, was arguably better than it was given credit for.

Now, with the full trailer for David F. Sandberg’s Until Dawn dropping this week, fans are getting a closer look at the highly anticipated horror-thriller—one that has already sparked debate over just how much a film adaptation can diverge from its source material while still bearing the same name.

A Fresh Take on the Horror Classic

The new trailer confirms that while Until Dawn may not retain the original game’s iconic butterfly effect mechanic, it introduces an intriguing twist: a time loop structure where characters must relive the same horrifying night repeatedly, making different choices along the way. The film still includes key elements from the PlayStation classic—most notably, the eerie presence of Wendigos and a chilling performance from Peter Stormare—but also introduces new threats, including a masked killer and a series of gruesome deaths that reset the timeline.

Set in a remote suburban country house instead of the game’s wintry ski chalet, the movie follows a group of friends who find themselves trapped in a nightmare that resets each time one of them dies. With each loop, the dangers become increasingly unpredictable, forcing them to uncover the truth behind the curse before their lives— and their chances—run out.

Official Synopsis

The film stars Ella Rubin, Odessa A’zion, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, and Maia Mitchell, and its official synopsis reads:

“One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends venture into the remote valley where she vanished, searching for answers. While exploring an abandoned visitor center, they are hunted by a masked killer and gruesomely murdered—only to wake up and find themselves back at the start of the same night. Trapped in an unrelenting cycle, they realize that with each reset, the threats change, becoming more terrifying each time. As hope fades, they uncover a grim truth: their survival is limited by the number of times they can die. Their only escape? Making it through the night… until dawn.”

Horror fans can expect a blend of slasher elements, psychological terror, and supernatural horror as the film leans into classic genre tropes— with the added nightmare fuel of the Wendigo.

Release Date

Until Dawn is set to hit UK cinemas on 25th April 2025. Whether it lives up to its PlayStation predecessor or redefines the story in its own right, one thing is certain—it’s going to be a terrifying ride.
